Navigating a New Regulatory Era

The extension of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) to shipping in 2024 marked one of the most significant regulatory shifts in recent years. For ship managers, owners, and charterers, it introduced complex obligations around monitoring, reporting, and surrendering allowances for voyages into and within the EU.

At Synergy Marine Group, we saw this not just as a compliance challenge but as an opportunity to strengthen trust, transparency, and accountability across our managed fleet and beyond.

Delivering on the First Surrender Deadline

Ahead of the inaugural surrender deadline on 30 September 2025, Synergy successfully:

  • Surrendered 500,000+ EU Allowances (EUAs), valued at over USD 44 million
  • Covered 350+ EU-calling vessels
  • Represented 200+ registered owners across 20 ISM companies
  • Supported external shipowners outside our directly managed fleet

All obligations were met without penalties, reflecting the resilience of our systems and the professionalism of our teams at sea and ashore.

A Trusted Partner Beyond Our Fleet

“This milestone reflects the collective effort of our people and the trust of our customers. It also shows that our systems are trusted not only within our managed fleet but by other shipowners who relied on us for compliance. It is a step forward in the industry’s journey towards resilient and responsible decarbonisation.” – Raj Devanand, Managing Director, Synergy Marine Services

Preparing for the Road Ahead

The EU ETS is only the beginning. The regulatory landscape is evolving rapidly, with FuelEU Maritime, UK ETS, and ongoing IMO deliberations at MEPC sessions set to further shape the industry’s path.

Synergy’s approach remains clear:

  • Robust systems for data integrity and reporting
  • Transparent processes that inspire customer confidence
  • Future-ready solutions that enable compliance today while preparing for the net-zero transition

Synergy and Azolla: Driving Decarbonisation

Through Azolla, our decarbonisation arm, we integrate regulatory compliance with operational excellence and innovation. From emissions reporting to energy-efficiency strategies, we are helping shipowners navigate today’s frameworks while building resilience for tomorrow.
