Decarbonisation is an immediate and long-term priority for the maritime sector.

In 2025 alone, 31 vessels in Synergy Marine Group’s managed fleet have undertaken biofuel voyages, clear evidence of how sustainable fuels are rapidly moving from trials to routine operations.

Co-CEO – Ship Management, Ajay Chaudhry, observed:
“Scaling biofuels from pilot projects to mainstream deployment requires more than fuel supply. It demands operational discipline, technical readiness, and close collaboration across the value chain. Every successful voyage strengthens the industry’s confidence in adopting these solutions at pace and scale.”

Vikas Trivedi, Co-CEO – Ship Management, added:
“Marine biofuels are still in their early stages – about 0.5% of global bunkered fuel and roughly 1.6% in hubs like Singapore, yet the market is set to grow by over 12% annually this decade. The future will be multi-fuel, with many fleets by 2050 running on at least three or four fuel families, including biodiesel, methane, methanol, and ammonia.”

Since 2021, sustainable biofuel use across our fleet has prevented 85.93% of GHG emissions compared to conventional fuels, reducing over 12,000 metric tonnes of emissions on a Well-to-Wake basis without engine or fuel infrastructure modifications. Through meticulous pre-bunkering checks, controlled storage and temperature management, and staged engine changeover, our technical teams ensured zero operational disruptions,  even recording improved SDA analysis compared with conventional fuels.

As Group CEO Jesper Kristensen often reminds us:
“The cleanest tonne of fuel is the one that is never burnt. The real breakthrough is not just proving biofuels work, it’s embedding them into day-to-day ship operations without disruption, so they become an ordinary part of extraordinary progress.”

We also extend our appreciation to our seagoing colleagues,  the heart of shipping’s evolution towards greener fuels , whose skill, discipline, and adaptability are key to safely adopting non-fossil energy solutions.

World Biofuel Day, observed annually on 10 August, commemorates Rudolf Diesel’s 1893 experiment with peanut oil, which laid the groundwork for alternative fuel innovation. This year’s theme, “Biofuels: A Sustainable Pathway to Net Zero”, aligns with our mission to embrace renewable energy sources and foster a circular economy.
