Weaving Identity, Preserving Heritage
Empowering Communities Through Culture and Sustainability
“They are not weaving fabric. They are weaving their own identity.”
These powerful words from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, spoken in the 124th edition of Mann Ki Baat, capture the spirit of a movement we at Synergy Marine Group have been privileged to support, with purpose, continuity, and deep respect.
Since 2017, Synergy has supported the Mauna Dhwani Foundation’s work in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, a network that now includes over 650 tribal women reviving the traditional Santhali saree and other indigenous crafts. These weavers are not only preserving cultural heritage but also building lives of dignity and self-reliance.
One such collaboration is the creation of the HASA bag, made of eco-friendly juco (jute + cotton) and named after “Mother Earth” in the Ol Chiki script, the written language of the Santali people. These Synergy-branded bags, adorned with traditional fish-and-diamond motifs in natural dyes, are now used by our seafarers to carry PPE. In 2024 alone, 15,000 HASA bags were distributed, reducing emissions while enabling sustainable livelihoods for over 1,000 artisans.

Today, these remarkable weavers also craft sarees, shawls, and custom-designed covers for Synergy’s annual desk diaries. Each diary includes a personal note from the artisans, highlighting the cultural significance of their craft.
Our collaboration began when our Founder, Capt. Rajesh Unni, visited the village five years ago. Deeply moved, he committed to long-term engagement-a reflection of Synergy’s belief that meaningful support must be rooted in sustained, on-ground presence.
The Handloom Training Centre in Odisha today mirrors the structured, purpose-led environments we nurture at sea-founded on dignity, excellence, and opportunity.
This is what community empowerment looks like. And we’re proud to be part of it.
